Session 3: Dead Ghouls Don’t Say No

The day starts out early, our Mage in training, Dune, is quiet. That first taste of action can change people’s outlook on life. The HAK she had yesterday seemed to be concerning her, but she is back with us. As we are walking back to the ghoul’s track, we discuss the actions from yesterday. I commented that the rat men, I call the Zooks, were evil and our enemies. Dume spoke up and said maybe we were in the wrong, we came into their lands and encroached on there area. But, I remined her what she translated to us, do we take them now or get the others to kill them. She still insisted that we could have been in the wrong, and I let that go. She has been a valuable part to our group’s success to argue with her until it hurts our affiliation. Tam was a person with our ranger core and got in a big philosophic argument when Sgt. Salmar called the land “god forsaken”. Tam got very upset and argued with Sgt. Salmar until he resigned form the core. The maps I have been making seem to be good, we could use the map to find our way back to the ghoul tracks. We tracked them back to a cave and carefully perused the ghouls we found one in a cave room. Zep flew into the ghoul with a flurry of rapier and dagger strikes. He shanked the ghoul with his rapier, like Gil our scout. Striking the foul thing with precision causing more damage that a less exact strike would have done. The ghoul bit me and the cold feeling of being paralyzed started over me, which I resisted. I think spells were fired at the god forsaken creature. I pounced on the ghoul pounding it with my quick short swords. The next thing I know is Pip saying its dead, dead Bart. It looks like I stabbed it ten times, I an a little embarrassed. I have been worried about the other people in our party not being experienced in battle, and what have I done? I missed a rat-man, Zook, with an arrow, Missed the tracks of ghouls as I mapped, and now I have lost control and went barbaric rage on this ghoul. After we gathered ourselves, we continued din to the cave system. I map the cave system separately from our over land map. In the cave system there is an upward sloping system which made its way on of the cave system. About half way up that sloped passage we found a room where a stake of uneaten skulls was neatly stacked. On the opposite wall was a six-symbol glyph. Dume said those characters were in her family’s spell book which she referenced and determined the symbols were different creature types, undead, fey, etc. She said the top symbol was the symbol for undead. Pip un-nerved picked up a skull to show Zep there was on issue with handling it. I think Pip then played us by using magic to move a skull towards Zep spookily. It may be a use of her illusion ability, because she latter made a skull appear around Zep. We went back to the cave system and continued deeper into the cliff. We came upon a under water stream, again a slipped trying to jump the stream. We set ropes for the group to safely cross the stream. We explored and mapped more of this cave complex and encountered a pair of ghouls. We dispatched them, I keep my cool, and even delayed to allow Pip to through her spell. The spell she calls Fairy Fire, that makes a dim lit glow around the creatures which makes it more advantageous for me to strike the creature. Zep ripped into the ghoul closest to him, Magic missile flew from Dume and struck that same ghoul. The ghoul on me clawed at me casing the chain links from my chain armor to break my skin. The ghoul lit up and I struck like a thunder ball. We dispatched the ghouls and we took a short rest, most of my wounds from the day started to close. We tracked the cave complex and I could tell there were several mor ghouls. Pip “talked” some cave creature and came back to us and said there were/are eight ghouls, which is what I was tracking also. So there are between 5 to 8 more ghouls left in this complex. Our group wisely exited the cave complex and went back to town. I took the heads of the ghouls and went straight to the rangers to see if there was a bounty to be made on killing ghouls. Major Zandor was delighted with the information I had collected and the fact that we killed three ghouls. He will talk to the Governor of the city to see if the cite can set an under-the -table bounty for our efforts. We both don’t want children or other uncappable buffoons going into the woods and getting killed. I found and passed out the cut of the small gold Major Zandor could give us to each of members of the group, except Zep. Zep was way ahead of me in the “dranking” department and had taught the entire tavern a song …” Hero of Stannis(berg) – The Man They Call Bart” Which in the song recants the days dispatching of ghouls. I was recognized given real good stew and was made to address the crowed. I have my gratitude for their support and gave a disclaimer to leave the adventuring to experts.
